How to choose a cutting and serving board

In order to properly choose your next wooden plank purchase, it is a good idea to consider two important criteria:

  • determine its purpose. It is important to know whether you will use it on a daily basis – that is, the board will depreciate quickly – or whether you will use it for more special occasions and maintain it fairly (twice a month – treatment with natural oil or olive oil).
  • pay attention to the wood – choose a board that is a single piece of wood. This reduces the possibility of it falling apart more quickly.

One piece of wood:

Avoid wood that is like plywood or very thin. Choose boards that are at least 2 cm thick and made from a single piece of wood. This will keep it strong longer and it will be much more resistant to washing, soaking (although not recommended) and cutting.

Width and length – the larger the board. In addition to the space you will need, this also leads to easier and more disrupted integrity (breakage or cracks). They are also easily distorted by moisture.

One of our boards used for over a year and passed over 16 dishwashers. The main problems with this treatment and washing is discoloration of the wood and loss of the pattern. It can easily be maintained when treating the board with mineral oil or zephthys at home. By being applied with a dry cloth once a week.

Dimensions and thickness

If you want to have a really sturdy board, consider the dimensions well. Choose a thicker board, especially if the dimensions are over 50 cm in width. Then even glued boards can be more resilient in long use. In case the boards are up to 30 cm, you can safely choose from 2 cm upwards. Wider boards are susceptible to warping with moisture and drying (using the example of the dishwasher).

In case you use the board only for cutting

Storage – store it so that it is away from flammable objects, stovetops and in places that do not retain moisture.

Maintenance – maintain your board at home with olive oil, oiling it every two weeks, you can reduce the period if you see it starting to lose its colour quickly.

Drying – always wipe your board after washing it.

Disinfection – you can pour boiling water over it for disinfection
